During those early days of coaching, I searched everywhere for a book that carefully explained the techniques behind skating. It was hard for me to remember the basics. I wanted to be more specific about where a skater should press on the blade, how to teach jump rotation, increase speed, etc.
This is the book I wanted but couldn’t find when I started my coaching career.
This book, and ebook, is a resource for adult skaters and coaches looking to learn more about the sport.
I hope it can inspire skaters to not only build a strong baseline, but help them create their own ideas about coaching. The most amazing thing I found during my coaching journey is how everything in figure skating connects and builds on itself.
"There are many drills to work on a truly locked free leg and pointed toe for axel take-offs. Skaters can glide slowly at the wall on the left foot, then rock their hips forward, lock and point, and grab the wall to balance in that take-off position. Skaters really struggle with axel take-offs, especially when they fail to get their hips forward and bring the right hip through so that they can switch their axis quickly at the top of the jump. "
